What Happened to Tree Lounge Tree Stands?

with 314 comments

The original Tree Lounge tree stand. Many accessories were added over the years including wheel kits and covers.

Regrettably, the Georgia based company Tree Lounge that was started by Bob and Margaret Hice is no longer in business. The Hices sold their company, but the new owners went bankrupt and they got their company back with a load of debt. In addition they received something of a black eye because the new owners sent production to China, and the resulting stands were not as rugged as the originals.

The Ground Lounge tree stand.

Bob and Margaret resumed production at the original factory in North Georgia. They re-introduced the original model of the stand with an elaborate set of accessories, added a new line “Elusive Whitetail,” and made a “Ground Lounge” and “Ladder Lounge” to enlarge their product offerings. During this time Bob died and Margaret, who always ran many aspects of company operations, took over management.

With much reluctance the last of the company’s 40-odd employs were let go and

The Elusive Whitetail tree stand.

the company closed its doors last spring. To hear a more complete version of the story, listen to an interview that I did with Margaret on “Hovey’s Outdoor Adventures that aired on Oct. 17, 2011, on WebTalkRadio.net. This show is available as an “archived show” and may be heard by activating the drop-down menu. I found Margaret, who is the secretary of the the Georgia Chapter of  Safari Club International, representing the Chapter.

Margaret Hice at the EPIC Game Fair.

To listen to the show  from the EPIC Game Fair, which includes Martaret’s interview,   go to my website www.hoveysmith.com , and click on the “Hovey’s Outdoor Adventures Radio Show” link just below the banner. That will take you to  the  WebTalkRadio.net show page.

The original stands were rugged and can be expected to last for generations.  I do not know of anyone supplying parts and accessories for them. If someone is, please reply to this post.

  1. Hi my name is Cory Gray and have an orignal Tree Lounge. You can’t beat that stand, bar none. I would like to see the right person start the company again. Thank you Bob and Margaret Hice for a wonderful product that no company can match. (Edited comment WHS.)

  2. Many people will agree with you. Keep your stands nice. I suspect that they and their accessories will increase in value.

  3. I have always wanted to own one but never could afford it. I purchased one that was abused from a 3rd owner and am currently trying to repair it. I need the bow platform badly. It’s sad that I can no longer have the chance to own a brand new out of the box Tree Lounge. I was shocked when I ordered a catalog and found out a month later they had closed down, I hope they will open back up so I may have a chance to buy the best hunting product ever made, but untill then I’ll keep searching for a used one, rigging the one I have, and waiting for the good news of their return.

    • Hi Jeremy if you are still in the market I have a Tree Lounge with chill pad, archery platform, gun holders, bow holder, and shooting rail. I am to old to use it and have been reduced to hunting on the ground. The stand is the newer model if I remember correctly they said it weighed 19 pounds without all of the add ons. I also have the attacment for leveling the climer part of the stand. If your still interested email me at michaelchilcutt@hotmail.com

  4. Sad. All I can wonder is how a product that is so amazing, can fall of the face of the earth? This has got to be profitable for someone to manufacturer. This story must have future chapters.

    • I too own one of the very early models (recommended to me by a coworker )who’s cousin was from GA. When I purchased it they really had not gotten a large marketing effort under way yet. Could last forever only the seat /sling replacement
      might be needed.

      john

      November 29, 2011 at 2:42 pm

      • the seat can be replaced if you can find somebody with a tornup trampoline, the seat is made out of the same stuff you just have to figure out how to sew it on the ends so it will work

  5. witch one is the best the square frame or the d shaped frame thanks

    carl eaton

    December 3, 2011 at 8:09 pm

    • The square-framed tubular versions were all made in the U.S. and are the stronger design.

      hoveysmith

      December 4, 2011 at 6:02 am

      • I have one that I bought in the early eighties and still works as good as new. The rectangle tubular frame is STRONG and a bit heavy. The stand can be put 30′ off the ground and not have a worry. The first year I used it on a ice coated tree and it never shifted on the tree, made me happy to own one.

  6. This is the best tree stand I have ever used. I have a few accessories but I am looking for others, such as the angle adjusters. Any ideas

    Jake

    December 19, 2011 at 3:39 pm

    • My only suggestion would be to fabricate them yourself. I have never owned a traditional Tree Lounge, and I am not sure what they look like.

      hoveysmith

      December 19, 2011 at 9:39 pm

    • The original angle adjuster was a hardwood angle wedge with a hole bored through it and a adjustable bungie cord with hooks on the ends to wrap around the tree. This has worked fine for me. You could make one easy enough. If you need more info let me know. Tim.

      • How handy are you with a needle and thread? You need a tough synthetic outdoor cloth. Some have suggested trampolene fabric. Seal the cut edges with a torch, fold, sew with synthetic fishing line, use a gromet kit, put in 8 gromets top and bottom, tie to frame with nylon 1/4-inch rope, seal ends of rope. This is about a 3-evening project for one guy. There are other synthetic cloths that would work. Used filter cloth from paper mills or clay processing plants, for example. Sail canvas can also work, but would not be so long lasting.

      January 25, 2013 at 4:32 pm

      • On the last versions of the tree stands sold by Tree Lounge, a very complex safety harness with leg supports was shipped with these stands. You needed daylight and an assistant to best put on the thing. I cut away the bottom portion and used the chest and trouser belt to offer support for the lower limbs. Any of a number of safety harnesses would work, if that is what you need. Or, are you talking about the webbing connecting the bottom and top parts of the stand as you climb?

    James Reymundo

    March 24, 2012 at 1:46 am

    • There is really not much to it. If you have some fabrication skills,a welder or someone that can weld it for you and the measurements it could be built yourself. If you think you can do it, I have the old type that had plywood on it that I could take measurements from.

      Tim

      March 24, 2012 at 10:38 pm

      • Remember that you are putting your life on the line if you build that archery accessory yourself and attach it to a Tree Lounge. The base stand is amply rugged, but you have to make sure that whatever you tack onto it will support you. Whatever you build, try it out at a couple of feet and “proof test” it before climbing a tall pine and “hanging it all out.”

        hoveysmith

        March 25, 2012 at 12:59 am

      • She is now the Sect. of the Georgia Chapter of Safari Club International. Google that and reply to some of their materials and the communication will reach her. I do not know what may be available from Tree Lounge. Perhaps after being seriously burned before by others getting into the Tree Lounge business, she is understandably reluctant to have anything to do with anyone on this topic.

James, I am glad that you are having good luck with refrubishing these old stands. There is certainly a demand for people wanting to keep taking deer from their old stands. I cannot judge how large this market is, considering the competition from lighter weight climbing stands. Nonetheless, these old U.S. made stands have real value, and people will pay to keep them in service.

Please post up a couple of photos of your revitalized stands, prices and contact information when you have some available. I think people would be interested in taking a look at your work before they send their stands to you. I realize at this early stage refitting each stand is a custom job. After you have done a sufficient number to firm up your pricing and costs, you can also post a price list for repairs if you like. Put an end date on this list, so that you are not locked in as prices for metal, energy, shipping and fabric increase. These will go no where but up in the foreseeable future.

  12. I just bought a slightly used one with every conceivable accessory for 150 dollars as a backup for my generation 1 stand. Good thing I found that deal. I hate to hear that the company shut down and that Mr. Hice had died. He seemed like he would have been a nice man. I will still enjoy the videos and my tree lounges are always going to be the most comfortable stand period.

    Dave

    May 6, 2012 at 5:12 am

    • Thats a pretty good deal.I had thought about selling one of mine until this. One of the stands I got for 80 dollars and it had the bow adapt and chillpad.I seen one last summer at a yard sale for 50 dollars. It needed painting but I wished I would have bought it.I can’t believe he was selling it that cheap, I guess he did not know how much it was worth. I hardly ever use mine anymore but I think I will hold on to both stands. You never know. One day they might be worth 500 a piece. They will be a part of hunting history because they are the originals and made in the USA!!!

  13. I bought a Tree Lounge in 1989 at a show in Charlotte, from Mr. Hice and his wife. It has been the best tree stand I have ever used. It came with 4 videos that have really been helpful. The world has truely lost a good person. I know I will miss his expertice. My husband weighs 340 pounds and he says the security he feels in the tree lounge makes all the difference in the world. We also regret the loss of this man and his company. Also, I am looking for a part, the crank to attach to the tree. You can contact me if you have one at 910-368-8842

    • I recently bought a treewalker ProMag and the chill pad for this stand will not only work great with the Tree Lounge it is actually superior. Filled with closed cell foam and has straps that are MUCH stouter. They are long enough to fasten to the tree is you want. Check the website.

    • Most Tree Lounge users faced with this problem will make or adapt something that will work. There is no presently available parts supplier that I know of. Write your particular needs here, and perhaps someone can help you out. For the U.S. made stands, these used American Standard fittings, screws, etc.

      • I was reading some reviews about tree lounge and saw your name a few times. I have hunted from a tree lounge since the mid 80’s and I know it’s the best tree stand in the world. But I have a question that you may can answer. how much longer is the extended version than the original? Seat climber & foot climber? Can you help me with that? I’d sure appreciate it.

  16. I have hunted out of my tree lounge since 1997 and have taken several nice bucks with it.My stand is the original model and i bought a new bowhunting platform for it,the second year that i had it. I loaned it to my friend to hunt out of it once and he liked it so much he bought one for himself complete with bowhunting platform.During one hunt of mine after getting off work on 3rd shift i fell asleep in it 25 ft up .I remember it still being dark at around 7am in the morning and thought i would take a half hour nap.when i woke up it seemed real late to me and i looked at my watch and it was 2pm.I desided then to get down from my stand and go home as i slept through my hunt. But the fact that i slept in it for 7 hours with out waking up showed how comfortable and safe it is.Since the company closed down i would recommend to anyone to try to find i used one before i would buy a new stand from any other company.A different friend of mine once talked me into using his api climbing treestand and the bottom platform rope came untied from the top platform and slid 10ft down the tree from me. After that incident i have never used any other treestand.

  18. If there is an investor that wants to take over and make the product and it’s accessories to the ruggedness they once were, would it be possible to acquire the company?

    Stu hamblen

    August 29, 2012 at 10:23 pm

    • Stu, read some of the previous posts and you will see that others have expressed similar interests. Restarting Tree Lounge could expose you to some old claims on its assets, copyright and patent problems. This is not to say that it could not be done, but go in with you eyes open and with warnings that you are likely going to be hit with some unforseen and costly happenings. It is better that those interested share their talents and the risks. There is likely not room for three such companies to launch Tree Lounge like stands at once. Although, I can see the need for a series of one-man Tree Lounge reconditioning businesses scattered around the country working the used stand market.

  21. I was introduced to hunting in Ohio in a Tree Lounge. As someone who is nervous with heights, I managed quite well in a Tree Lounge. I was hoping to be able to hunt with one here in Michigan now that cross bows are allowed during bow season but seems they’re pretty rare (and getting even more expensive than they used to be). I watched a video showing Margaret doing a back bend over the edge of the Tree Lounge. That combined with seeing a woman hunting, helped give me a boost. Didn’t realize at the time what I was passing up when my sister moved and sold hers four years ago. :( And it’s really sad to hear about what happened to the company and the owners. Definitely a product to be proud of!!

  22. hey Sandra, i have two tree lounges and both are in great shape, in fact iv’e repainted both stands and now they look brand new. One stand iv’e had for about 9 years and the other about 2 years. The one iv’e had for 2 years i got on a trade for a hunting blind that i only had 80 bucks in and i got the old bow adapter and the tree nest seat pad with it. I hardly ever use them but they are great stands and i would hate to part with them. I think i’ll hang on to them for a while, never know they might be worth a lot one day.

I have a brand new extra seat as well as two large knob sets as replacements. I also have the steep angle adjuster for the seat section as well as the chill pad accessory. The stand has been used about 10 times. I am getting too old to climb and will sell it. I live in VA and can ship it to you. I am asking $400. Let me know if you are interested. 25. I’m glad to see this article is still alive, hadnt checked it since i wrote on it last year, and seem to have missed a chance buying one on here. Is there anybody in virginia (hopefully central va) that is refurbishing or fabricating them cause the one i got last year has the normal first run upper but the foot climber is screwed up and i lost my patience trying to fix it and make the bow platform. I tried to sell it, thought 80 was fair but all i get is low ball offers or the guy that wants me to ship ot across the country with a check so he can ” fix and return it”. As much as id like to have it fixed or traded off with cash to boot for one thats already been repaired and ready to go, i cant keep forgetting of how i have already been burnt already when i paid 120 last year for it when the foot climber is nothing like any other one i have seen. So if there is anyone local that is in the business of fixing and trading please let me know cause the best I’ve been told was I’ll give ya 20 for the top for parts.

    • There is a lot of interest in these stands. They are well made, useful stands. If you have a chance to purchase two of them, do. Keep one and sell one if you do not need them both. The price of them, particularly the original all-American-made versions, will do nothing but increase.

        sniper aka mike

        October 7, 2012 at 7:39 am

      • The original price much depended on what of the many accessories that you bought with them. As I recall, the basic stand was $2-300, with accessory packages, like the wheel kit, running hundreds of dollars more. As with anything used, the cash value of a used stand depends on its condition and, most importantly, on what a buyer is willing to pay; rather than its original price.

  31. i can make anything u might need for a tree lounge.even a new one if needed.I’ve been making them for over 10th years for friends and family members. This stand is the best one for hunting in my book.I have shot over 30 deer out of my bow model. For bigger people I would recommend making it out of steel. Its heavier but it holds up better to more weight.I have tested mine to over 2000 lbs. I’ve even took a 600lb motorcycle and dropped it while connected to the stand.yes it bent but it held very very well and was even still useable.steel version is 170.00 painted any color u would like.even camo. • They asked for your height when you ordered. I believe it was over 6’3″ go the extended. They lengthened the frame slightly ( I think about 2″) which allowed more legroom. I am 6′ and tried one and found that the backs of my legs were jammed hard on the rail because my feet didn’t reach the footrest properly. Ordered mine as standard and no problem. Have discovered that a cushion under your rear will let you use the longer one if you not tall enough.

      • It sounds like there has been sufficient activity to start putting some prices on tree lounge stands. These are certainly not engraved in stone and the correct price is whatever is agreed between a buyer and seller.
If you are thinking about what to ask or pay it appears like the following is about right:

New in box basic lounge no accessories $400

Gently used, all parts there with extra accessories $400 (all accessories as in Margaret Special) $500

Frequently used paint chipped, but all there and working $350

Hard used, some parts missing worn, $300

        Wheel kit, as new $100

        Wheel kit, used $85

        Wheel kit, hard used $50

Bent up lounge with either top or bottom member bent missing or worn parts (rebuild special) $100

This appears to be a reasonable guide to present pricing.

  38. Anyone have the dimensions of the ” climbing bars” including bolt types and length and how they are secured in the tubing ? Last weekend someone tried to steal my tree lounge. Since it was locked to a tree ,they managed to remove the knobs and the bars that lock it to the tree. Now my stand is useless. I need to make it usefull again. Thanks in advance.

    John

    November 13, 2012 at 3:58 pm

    • Ok now u have even me confused????
The original stands had only a bar across the back side locking it to the tree with two 3/8 inch bolts. I replaced the bolts with clips but that was just me.if u still have the stand just measure across the beams to get the sizes u need. Or if u want the total dimensions to build a new stand just email me at briphillipsonebay@yahoo.com. and ill send it to you.

      brian phillips

      November 14, 2012 at 3:00 am

      • Thanks for the reply, Interesting thought on the clips but if it’s 3/8 pins how do they keep the bar snug to the frame. Since my bars ( for both the foot climber and seat frame) are gone I didn’t know if there was anything special order specific to this stand. Any how much it would cost to replce them? They couldn’t get the stand , I had a cable lock through the braces and around the tree.

        John

        November 14, 2012 at 2:45 pm

      • Just get a price of 2 inch x 1 1/2 inch tubing. Steel or aluminum will work just fine.cut to length (width of stand) Drill holes to match stand and your good to go.this should get u back in stand.

      • Thank You. Already done.
Bob Hice thought out of the box and came up with Tree Lounge.
I frequently deal with metal fabricators throughout my travels. Unless someone has a objection especially someone in the Hice family I was going to approach some of these fabricators to see of they wanted to entertain the idea of putting this stand back into production.

        John

        November 15, 2012 at 2:10 pm

      • If you or anyone else makes a new version of the Tree Lounge, send me one. I will try it out, evaluate it and post a review on line. There is certainly interest in these stands, but the market will not likely accept more than one maker of new stands. I don’t think that there would be sufficient demand and two companies trying to beat each other on price would likely result in both failing. There would be considerable risks if two or more decided to produce Tree Lounge stands in any given year. There is more room for repair, parts and supply fabricators on a regional basis as small one-man shops.

My suggestion would be to do a virtural company and try to cooperate; rather than compete. I would hope that the result would be a new American-made Tree Lounge stand that would make money for the participants and again provide the consumer with an outstanding product.

    • That is an interesting twist that I did not get from Mrs. Hice when I did the interview. You can listen to the interview on WebTalkRadio.net. This interview was done at the Epic Game Fair in Atlanta about a year ago. Go to my website, http://www.hoveysmith.com and at the very bottom of the page click on the link for the Hovey’s Outdoor Adventures Radio Show Blog. Look for the show with “Quail Balls” in the title.

There was strong market resistance to the change in the shape of the aluminum structural elements from a square tubing to the “D” shape.

Good luck on your attempt to reintroduce it. As you make progress please post it. Quite a few people are interested, as you have seen.

      hoveysmith

      November 20, 2012 at 4:45 am

    • David, I have noticed a few differences between my Treelounge and my friend’s Treelounge. Before the “locking” bars were stolen they were 1 1/2 ” x 2″ tubing. The holes in my lounger are 3/8″.
My buddy’s lounge is different, maybe older. His holes are 5/16″ and the foot climber “locking” bar is 1″x 1″. The seat climbing bar is 1 1/2 ” x 2″.
I went the the fabrication shop. These guys build mostly towers , leaning post and and accesorries for boats. They didn’t have 1 1/2″ x 2″ aluminuim tubing. They had 1″ x 2″ tubing. I told the shop owner what this was for, as he is an avid hunter. He advised the 1 x 2 cut to length was be plenty strong enough for this application.
How many differences between generations of stands have you come across?
I am learning a lot about this excellent stand and it’s history.
I really believeve you are onto something good. Of all the stands I see hanging at Bass Pro , none to me compare to the Treelounge.
Also, since I am putting 3/8″ holes in the new tubing , it looks like the pins would work out fine since it’s going to be a snug fit. The pin has to lock at exactly 3″.

    • If it is ever made again, I would love to have someone contact me at bdudding@vt.edu. I would also like to know if I can get parts or accessories for the one that I have now. I need another bottom for mine. I’ve had it a very long time. It’s the rectangular shape. Look forward to hearing from you.

there was 3 different versions that i know and have seen

the older lounges had bigger back bars(braces) when they were sold raw aluminum u had to paint them
then the d shaped frame was smaller but stronger because of the shape and the extruded lines on the sides of the d shape the powder coated hunter green stands
then they went back to the square shape frame before they went out of business and stayed with some of the smaller ideas
when the stands were sold black and there also was some green ones also was the 1st of this version and then the 2nd version was black and thats the last stands they made and sold

    thanx david

  43. hovey,
yes there was a strong market to change to d-shaped because alot of the stand on the market were getting donwn between 16-20 lbs
the d shaped frame came in at 18-19 lbs
then the newer bow platform was 2.5lbs
so they had to compete with the market for liter safer stands !
to stay and compete in the market

the older square tube frames were at 29-32lbs stand only
4lbs for the bow adapter and then 2-3 lbs of assec(chill pad, tree, nest ,shooting rail, pillow, steep angle pad)
imo what hurt tree lounge was when they bought brent hunt stands and didnt want to sale instores(bass pro, cabelas, dicks sporting goods, gander mountain ,sportsman wharehouse)
i am stressing bigtime over this as i am putting alot of time in on this to get these going again
i beleive these are the safest most comfotable stands on the market and i will get this back on the market and in ohio, and i will attend every hunting show on this side of the us to get it going !
hovey i will send you one of the very first ones that come of the jigs!

    Thanx David

    • Thanks David. I will give it a good work out, and supply you with some photos and publicity.

Two shows to attend. One is the ATA (Archery Trade Show) and the Shot Show. Shot will be in Nevada for the next couple of years. It is held in January. This is an expensive show, but the nation’s largest. If you can only attend one show, this is the one to go to. Both of these shows are dealer only shows. Here you would be selling to sporting goods stores, rather than to individuals, as Bob and Margaret did. Their marketing plan was a bit different, but they made a success out of it. Either way will work. You can start out small to individuals and then grow your market in stores at a later time once you have commercial-size production capacity.

    • David, I agree that the Tree Lounge is the finest stand that I have ever had, but as far as the D shaped ones, I had both, one of the D shaped Cesso models, and one of the later green square tubed models. The D shaped one felt flimsy to me, and it did not seem to grip the tree as well as the square tube one. I sold the D and kept the square one. As far as the weight, the D with nothing on it weighed 21 lbs on my fish scale. The square weighs 25.8 with gun holders only. I wish you the best of luck with your venture, and I hope it turns out successful for you.
      Good luck.

      • My nephew also sold his “D” shaped stand after it slipped on him. His father has the older retangular which is what I had and it never slipped. I sold mine because of weight and bought a lighter stand, the TreeWalker ProMag XL. Very solid and doesn’t slip. 19lbs.

  44. I bought a stand back in 1999. I still have it, and i love it. The biggest downfall is that it weighs a ton and was kind of bulky and uncomfortable to get into the woods. That said, its a great stand. I have never felt safer in my stand and i would love to get my hands on a new one david if you are able to get the new one up and running.

  46. I have used my treelounge since 1998 and I personally believe that you can’t find a better stand on the market. In 2001 a friend and I built 3 copies of the stand using square aluminum tubing and they work like our originals. Instead of having the blocks in the tubing preventing the tubes from sliding apart, we used a series of holes and pins with kotter keys to hold them together. We also used that same design for the bow platform. I also built a scaled down version for my 11 year old daughter to use and she killed her first deer, a 5 pt. buck, this past Sept. on a youth hunt here in Michigan. David, if you’re still trying to get your company off the ground, you may want to look into how much you have to change a design before it is out of the realm of the Treelounge legacy. I used canvas duck cloth for the seat and I didn’t use the same tubing as in my original. We tested our 2×1 and 1/2 inch with over 1000 lbs of weight and it was more than enough to hold it. I hope that someone will take this “type” of stand into the future, as it is the best design ever. Good luck and good hunting.

    December 10, 2012 at 3:31 am

    • This illustrates what can be done if you have the metal fabrication skills, equipment and raw materials to replicate a Tree Lounge type of stand. Canvas duck cloth will work for seats provided that the stands are not left out in the weather. Tough synthetic fabrics are better, but even they must be protected from direct sunlight.

      hoveysmith

      December 10, 2012 at 6:23 am

      • Actually we sprayed the seats with a water repellant material used on boot leather. I believe that it would hold up to whatever mother nature can throw at it.

  47. I have a real TreeLounge with bowhunter platform and “The Leveler” attachment which is an extremely useful accessory. With the leveler, you can adjust the angle of the stand with one hand, while you’re climbing, rather than having to make a guess of the tree’s diameter at the height you plan to hunt…. before climbing. I have it in storage a few hundred miles away, so I cannot get it to you immediately. Make a reasonable offer. I plan to buy some other hunting gear I need with the money. tom.holden@gmail.com

    December 30, 2012 at 8:34 pm

    • You have purchased one of the best designed tree stands ever made. You can anticipate that if given reasonable care and not left in the woods from season to season that it will last a lifetime. There are many hunters who have used these stands for 20-years and more. The most common failing is losing knobs in the woods, followed by seats being torn by sharp objects or weakening from long exposure to direct sunlight. The most frequent other thing that happens to them is being backed into or run over by vehicles in the dark or around camp.

      • At least three people are interested. I cannot say who is further along at this point, but Tree Lounge appears likely to be a re-start in some, or perhaps more than one, configuration. The danger is that this is a good, but limited market that is not likely to support more than one company to the degree that will make it truly viable. I can see that there might be several refinishers and rebuilders around the country, but only one manufacturerer of new Tree Lounge stands.

  60. The wheel kit is easily made from 2 – 3″ pieces of 1 1/2″ aluminum angle and an old kids bike. Take the angle and drill two holes spaced to match tree lounge holes in one flat and one hole in middle of other flat. Take the wheels off the bike and bolt them through single hole, then use 2holes to bolt them to tree lounge. You now have a functional deer cart!

    DAVID

    April 23, 2013 at 1:31 am

  62. David it sounds like things are moving along. You need to consult with a patent lawyer about what exactly you can do with the patents. You can, and should, file for a trademark; but to be granted a patent you would have to produce some new physical feature or manufacturing process that the Hices did not employ. Just because a company changes hands or another person is producing the product, is not by itself grounds for filing a new patent on a line of products.

    hoveysmith

    April 23, 2013 at 5:13 am

  63. I was understanding if a patent was changed by 30%. You could apply for a new patent. I’ve owned three deluxe tree lounges. I met Mr Hice in Richmond, Va. He had the stand on a steel pole. It was incredible. That’s wene I bought my first stand. I can’t believe they are going to be built in China. Where is the tree lounge buisness at now with the patent? Is the copyright trademark for sale?

    Ben Crabtree

    May 17, 2013 at 2:43 pm

    • This is a very thorny problem and others have a nearly 2-year head start on working on reviving the Tree Lounge tree stand and once again making the original versions available to hunters. There is room for one new producer who is well financed with a good marketing plan and for a number of individuals who repair and/or refurbish these stands as one-person shops. The concept of bringing back these stands is popular, but the possibility is that more than one company may try it at once and all fail because of price competition between them and the small size of the market.

      hoveysmith

      May 17, 2013 at 3:07 pm

      • Is the trademark for sale. We have a aircraft industry here in Kansas that is suffering. It maybe a better location for starting a new company. Yes, the cost of the stands are more expensive. But there are people that will pay extra for a quality Treestand like the tree lounge. Putting together a good buisness plan is the tricky part? Having China build these are not what Margaret and Bob wants I’m sure. I’m just wondering if margret would have a meeting with me to let me pick her brain. I’m a 100% service connected veterian. And can get help from the SBA and Veterians Administration. My disability has helped me to know. When people say no or can’t. It makes me say yes and I can. It would be nice to have these stands made in America by disabled veterians. Bob Hice started this buisness by selling the tree lounge on the side of the road. And built the first stand out of wood. To me that says a lot about the tree lounge. And that mindset is how they built the buisness. And that mindset shouldn’t be outsourced to another country! How many stand companies send a video about the quality of a stand? And there Videos of margrets hunts were great. The tree lounge sells itself if you put it up agains other stands. I would also like to pick your brain about where the tree lounge. I think that the problem with the stand is when the original started getting modified. I’m just looking right now at the cost and production. Can’t you help me? Thanks for the help.

        Ben Crabtree

        May 18, 2013 at 1:25 pm

      • I have no direct connection with Tree Lounge, and my last contact with Margaret Hice was over two years ago. At that time she was the Sect. of the Georgia Chapter of Safari Club International and received E-mails through that address. I suggest that you Google the Georgia Chapter and attempt to communicate directly with her. As I mentioned, others may already have something in progress in regards to manufacturing these stands.

I also have the original bar, the nest type chill pad, pillow, gear bag, wheel kit, pack strap pads and support belt, gun holder hooks and the gun rest bar with the camouflage curtain. Over size knobs. It’s the D type frame green powder coad a little chipped and I believe it’s the extended model. 70. I have just posted a YouTube video “Assembling a Used Tree Lounge Tree Stand” for those people who purchased a used one, but did not get the Owners Manual or other information. You can see the video at: http://youtu.be/LMRy8NvX0FU.

  71. I have enjoyed reading comments on this blog. I came to it looking for info on what to sell my treelounge tree stand for. Wow, I wasn’t aware that they had sold the company and it later went out of business. I don’t have opportunity to hunt anymore, so I reluctantly have decided to sell my treelounge that I purchased in the early 90’s. I was unpainted aluminum, with the large knobs, bow stand attachment. I have custom camo painted the stand. Apparently it was such a good job that my son, who was in another stand only 50 yds. away, couldn’t see me when he looked away and then tried to find me again. Of course my personal camo and face paint didn’t hurt. From what I am reading, my original, made in the USA treelounge, is somewhat valuable. I would like to get $300 for it. If someone thinks that is reasonable, then email me at davidlori80@cox.net. I will send current pictures of the stand mounted on a pole or tree, even with me and my bow in it. I know, you can’t wait to see that, ha ha! David

  74. I have one of the original Tree Lounges that came in bare aluminum. I painted it in flat brown/black camo and it has held up very well since 1990. I also attached brown / black camo netting under black lounge material. I have video tape, manual also.I love this stand and have taken 84 deer out of it. Lower back problems prevent use of it now. Did have bow hunting platform, but did not use often so it got missing over the years. This it the safest stand I ever used. Never used a harness with it ever. Took many naps that way high up in a tree. Do not advise others to hunt that way just my choice. Never had it move once in it. You can get a rest aim in any direction, even behind you. Shot 3 deer with my Thompson Center muzzle loader out of it in as fast as I could reload once. They never saw what hit them. Will sell and can supply pics. Asking $200.00 and shipping. I live in Matthews, NC call 704-616-8372 or Email blackgold1982@hotmail.com ask for John.

    • Go to your local hardware store. These are U.S. dimension bolts on the bow stand and also get appropriately sized wing nuts and lock washers. Match up and get some spares for your others too. Others may now also offer the bolts with reproduction knobs.

  78. I used to have one of the older model tree lounges back in the early 90’s. I agree it is the best stand ever made. Really sorry to see the company close. I wish i had never sold mine. Does anyone know where I can find one or two of the ground lounges? Not sure how many of them were produced, was going to purchase them last year until I found out the company closed. Any help would be appreciated.

  79. I am sad to hear this. I was hoping to purchase another one (new). I have owned one for years which I purchased second hand. It is by far the best climbing tree stand that I have ever used. I guess that is not a fair statement. Once I owned one I never use anything other climbers! You could stay in it all day. My biggest problem was that it is so comfortable I fall asleep.

    • I occasionally get post on this blog for new in-box stands or those that have been very little used. Just keep checking back, you never know when one might turn up. Expect to pay $300 or more for tricked-out new stands.

    • Will do sir. Thanks for the reply. I still use mine but I may be replacing some parts this season. Mainly the plywood floor on the bow hunting attachment and the seat. This is a great product – not to mention I use to watch Mr. and Mrs. hunting videos all of the time.

      Ross Nichols

      September 27, 2013 at 10:47 am

      • The new plywood bottom for the bow stand is no real problem, but finding new seat materials can be. I polyurethane paint mine every couple of years and do not leave them out when I am not using them. If you needa new seat or knobs, etc. ask here andsomeone will be able to get them to you.

I’ll sell them for $300 each. Call me at 989-714-37 one one. My name is Chuck. You can pick them up or I’ll ship them at your expense. • Hey Guys- The tree lounge stand company went out of bussiness couple years ago. Partly because they had such a massive recall on the leveler in which the article says that if a heavy load is imapacted on the leverler that could crack and the bolts under the leverler could bend. Also I had heard from my couson that they had been sued by a hunter that had climbed up in a tree 30 to 40 feet high and the bolts broke. The poor guy ended up as a paraplgic for life. It must been true I had asked a sales rep about this from the tree lounge company and he asked me how I found out about it. I found about it from my couson due it was his hunting buddy who was the one who had the accident in the tree lounge. You can read more about it on this. website ( http://www.consumeraffairs.com) There are some tree lounge stands still available here and there.Me myself I changed from treestands to groundblinds couple years ago. Please be safe out there replace anything like bolts and nuts with heavy duty grade 8 bolts and nuts. Good luck in the hunting season.

  93. I have recovered a Tree Lounge manual and some instruction sheets on some of their accessories, such as the bow stand. I am inclined to re-publish these, but they are still under copyright protection. I do not know who owns these copyrights. If anyone does know, please let me know. Because there are so many used stands in circulation without these manuals, I would like to re-publish them as a matter of Public Safety. The Hices put considerable emphasis on using their tree stands safety and stressing the safe operation of these stands is a significant matter to new users who are not savvy about tree stand wedge placement, using their safety harness, the angle of climb, etc.

Thank you for building such a great product. This stand will be passed down to my children and they to can continue to build memories with their family. 109. Posted August 18, 2014. I own the original tree stand. I had to leave the U.S. for two years. I return home and had to leave again for two more years. Everything at my home was o.k. after being gone for so long. Thank God I am back in the U.S. for good.
My building was broken into and over 10,000.00 USD of different items were stold. It took me over 20 years to by the items that were stold from me. I caught the person and he served 204 days in jail.
My TREE LOUNGE was part of the items stold. But the person did not take the foot section. If anyone has an original treel lounge they would sell please e-mail me at jkay@glenraven.com or call me at 864-617-8463

      • I have a tree lounge with the bow hunter platform and the leveler. tom.holden@gamil.com It’s in about 85% condition. The only part that needs a little TLC is the bow hunter platform. The seat material is in perfect shape – I never left it out for more than one or two days … and only did that a couple times. I’d consider selling it. I’ve posted on this thread before but then forgot about it.

  111. I have a tree lounge for sale.
This is my second tree lounge. I bought the first one from Bob & Helen when they were here in Harrisburg, PA in the original Pennsylvania Outdoor Show many, many years ago. I watched Helen move up the steel poles as far as she could. I was sold on Tree Lounge.
It was the only tree stand that I sat in 13 hours straight. I got my largest 8 point buck with the bow while using a tree lounge. Then I sold that and I bought their newer and better version. Several shoulder and knee surgeries latter I have ended up only using latter stands.
I am now selling my second original tree lounge tree stand. Since I am a bow/rifle/muzzle loader/handgun hunter I found that tree lounge has al the necessary add-ons needed. it has all the necessary part that are suitable for all of those activities. This stand has been used only 2 times many years ago. Since then it has always being kept in my garage never left outside and is in excellent condition. l
If you are interested contact me by pjn@drnupe.com. I can have it boxed and sent almost anywhere so let me know if you want it. Hunting season is upon us here in PA.
